The Bizarre Injury Elite

Salad cream, dog urine, ironing boards, coffee tables, remote controls, computer consoles, grass, traffic cones and now rubbish bins might all sound like stuff you’d find inside the living room of your regular student accommodation, but in fact these rather harmless items have all been at the heart of some of the most comical football injuries.

Leeds United’s Lucas Radebe added his name to this select list, last week, after he aggravated a knee injury when his legs were dangerously swiped away from him by ice as he fell whilst taking the bins out at home - a slip up that even Peter Risdale would be proud of.

10) Rio Ferdinand (Leeds) – Whilst watching TV he pulled a leg muscle after having his leg on a coffee table for too long.

9) Lucas Radebe (Leeds) - Aggravated a knee injury when he slipped on ice whilst taking the bins out at home.

8) Bob Taylor (West Brom) – Injured his Achilles as a result of friction from his new leather shoes.

7) Derek McInnes (West Brom) – Damaged his ankle whilst failing to negotiate a traffic cone in training.

6) David James (Liverpool) – Admitted that he had ‘injured’ his concentration whilst playing too many video games. You’d think Glenn Roeder would have stopped that by now.

5) David Batty (Leeds) – Aggravated an Achilles injury when it was run over by his toddler on a tricycle. Like father, like toddler.

4) Darius Vassell (Aston Villa) – Gave himself a toe infection after he decided to drill a hole in his toe to relieve some blood. Half his nail went in the process.

3) Michael Stensgaard (Liverpool) – Dislocated his shoulder whilst taking an ironing board out of the cupboard.

2) Dave Beasant (Chelsea) – Dropped a jar of salad cream on his foot and missed the start of the 1993 season. Just as well if can’t even handle a stationary object.

And the winner…

1) Darren Barnard (Barnsley) – Out for five months with damaged knee-ligaments after he slipped in a puddle of his puppy’s urine. Now, that is taking the p…
